Stress Relief – It’s About More Than Your Schedule [Giveaway]

gaia herbs relaxation destress

Over the past two months I’ve been striving to have a healthier lifestyle. I switched to a Paleo diet (and managed to convince my husband to follow along) and recommitted myself to working out at the gym. Not only am I trying to reduce my waistline and increase my energy – I’m also determined to cut down my stress as well.

At first I thought it was an easy answer: reduce work and I’ll reduce stress. While that did help a bit, I’m realizing it’s not the only action I need to take. There are hundreds of sources of stress and work was only one of them. Some sources I have no control over such as trauma and tragedy. Even parenting has a base stress level that you can’t do anything about. But I’ve been feeling like there is more I can do, more action I can take.

One way I de-stress is with smell. I gravitate toward herbal scents like teatree or lemon grass. If you look through my bathroom cabinets (or around the entire edge of the tub) you’ll find my shampoos, lotions and body wash all offer some kind of relaxing or calming aroma from nature. I started to wonder: If just inhaling the scent of herbs can have a calming effect, what can they offer from the inside out?  At this point I knew nothing about it except that Lavender is soothing and teatree just smells really, really good.  It was time to get some information. Exploring Gaia Herbs I found out about stress relief herbs that I didn’t even know existed before.

Holy Basil - Your adrenal glands release hormones in response to stress, so making sure your adrenal glands are functioning well is essential to combating stress. Holy Basil can help support your adrenal glands by maintaining equilibrium within the body’s stress system.

Schisandra Berries - Consider what can help your body resist stress before it takes over. Schisandra berries provide powerful antioxidant protection and support mental endurance, nourishing the body’s natural defenses and reinforcing overall resistance to stress.

Rhodiola Root - Beyond the physical implications, stress can have negative effects on your emotions. Rhodiola root helps support a healthy mood by normalizing cortisol levels and other stress‐related hormones.

Ashwagandha - Stress can zap your energy. Rather than worry about how to create more, focus on conserving the energy you have. Ashwagandha supports your ability to conserve energy by rejuvenating your entire system, especially the endocrine and immune systems.

Wild Oats - Restful sleep is essential to achieving optimal health, yet it’s a necessity often overlooked when trying to combat stress. Wild Oats contain relaxing properties that support your nervous system, promoting relaxation after a stressful day.

When you are shopping for something that will affect your body – it’s always important to make sure it comes from only the best source.  I found that Gaia Herbs are 100% organic and cultivated the way nature intended  with responsible sourcing and purity testing. They hold to the idea of Purity + Integrity = Potency. With eco friendly cultivating methods, renewable farming and by working with organic harvesters and indigenous communities – Gaia provides a quality product that you can use with the confidence that your natural lifestyle convictions aren’t being compromised.

To achieve calmness and balance I try and take time for myself. I like to read a book in a quiet area, or take a relaxing bath.

Stress kills. There is good stress, but it always needs to be in balance. Work, Family, Friends/fun, and oneself. Too much time working will cause stress with your family and friends, not to mention yourself. Too much time with friends and fun will cause issues at work, leading to more stress. As long as there is a balance of quality time for all facets of your life, stress can be minimal, I believe.

I have 2 girls, one of which is still not in school. I also work from home (insurances/Medicare Part D appeals analyst) which you would think would help keep the stress level down, but it doesn’t because I am fully accessible to everyone throughout the day. The husband has been out of work since May, so I am the only income. In September, my aunt and her fiance moved in from Arizona, and also have not been able to find work. All of the above, that’s where my stress originates:)

I’m generally not a high stress person. I thrive on having a lot to do. I don’t care about what people think of me, so I don’t have that stressful pressure to please people. I just don’t let things get to me. Overly simple? Maybe. But it works for me.
